In June 2008, Deer Park started a workshop to train local villagers in making handicrafts with recycled waste materials. The aim of this project is both to support the local economy, through sustainable livelihood, and to protect the environment by reusing resources. The project has drawn an enthusiastic response from a core group of villagers, who are now producing a range of products which are sold in Deer Park’s on-site shop.
Bags, wallets and folders are made from discarded cloth scraps mixed with new cloth, and cards from recycled paper. Since February 2009, the project team has also been producing custom-made clothes, which have proven popular with Deer Park’s guests and visitors.
“Before I came here I had no idea about handicraft work and I didn’t know how to use these crafts. Since we started work I have learned a lot from the project and it has made me recognize that handicrafts are very useful for us and our environment. If people know how to repair their clothes and recycle cloth to make a wallet, book cover or card, instead of throwing it in the river or on the ground, just this alone could help us save the environment for the future”
